VAC Youth Visual Art Program
Art fosters the creative mind. With that belief in mind, this fund supports hands-on visual arts programming at the Newport Visual Arts Center (VAC) for youth aged 5 through 18 years. Local artists impart their techniques, passion and curiosity to the community’s children. The Youth Arts Program celebrates the memory of Nancy Jane Reid, the person who introduced youth arts programming to the VAC.
Nancy Jane served as OCCA Newport Visual Arts Center director for ten years, from 1998 to 2008, and her work with youth art education started well before that. In 1996, as a volunteer coordinator, Nancy Jane initiated a youth art education program the VAC called "Try Your Hand" because there were no after-school visual arts classes for kids who wanted more. Eventually, this evolved into "Art Mondays" and then, it was expanded to add "Art Tuesdays" and then further into "Art Summer."
