Place Description:

The Newport Visual Arts Center, located at the historic Nye Beach Turnaround, is a facility built by the City of Newport as a public art exhibition space and for art education programs and maintained by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts. Opening in 1983, the Newport Visual Arts Center (or "VAC") is the largest facility on the Oregon Coast built specifically for the exhibition of visual art. The VAC includes three traditional gallery spaces, as well as the newer "media room" and "Classroom Gallery."

The VAC also includes two classrooms/event spaces that are rented by a wide variety of community organizations and private parties. VAC rental and space information can be downloaded from this page (lower right). The VAC's preferred rental contact hours are Thursday-Sunday, 3pm to 6pm. Contact Cristina Kartsioukas at 541-265-6540 or vacrentals@coastarts.org.

The William Runyan Gallery occupies approximately 1,100 square feet on the first floor and exhibits 8-12 shows per year.

The Upstairs Gallery, a 300 square foot gallery space on the third floor level, schedules 8-12 exhibits per year featuring new and experimental artists in the norhwest region.

The Coastal Oregon Visual Artists' Showcase (COVAS), established in 2011, occupies space on the third floor of the Visual Arts Center. Download the initial COVAS exhibition catalogue as a PDF (5.8MB).

The Media Room was established in summer 2016 and is intended as a space for digital art and installations (video, photography, light and sound exhibitions). Located the VAC's second floory, the Media Room is approximately 300 square feet and has seating space for 15-20 viewers. The Media Room can also be used as a meeting and classroom space, and includes large darkroom sink.

The Classroom Gallery was established in summer 2016 as home for student artwork. Approximately 200 square feet, the Classroom Gallery is a less formal gallery space and also functions as a meeting and classroom space. Most work exhibited in the Classroom Gallery has been wall work. The Classroom Gallery has hosted exhibits generated through the OCCA Art Fridays program and the VAC Summer Camp as well as exhibits developed by outside groups such as the Newport Middle School and Neighbors for Kids. Contact the VAC director if you exhibit ideas to present for showcasing student-developed artwork.

All exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Contact the VAC director at twebb@coastarts.org regarding your volunteer interests. The VAC also has current needs for an event photographer and videographer.

The VAC Steering Committee was formed in 2014 and is making sure that the VAC will be on a sound footing well into the future. The Steering Committee is addressing building needs, VAC marketing, a VAC business model and funding, and future VAC arts-learning activities. The VAC Steering Committee includes representatives from partner organizations as well as at-large community members. This group meets on the third Tuesday of the month, 10am-noon. Contact Tom Webb at twebb@coastarts.org for details.
