The Newport Library Foundation announces its 2019 Newport Reads! selection, Whiskey When We're Dry by John Larison.
Set in The West in 1885, recently-orphaned seventeen-year-old Jessilyn Harney cuts her hair, binds her chest, dons boys' clothing and sets
off in search of her outlaw brother. Her journey, in Larison's hands, is not as much a reimagining of the traditional western as it is a challenge to the enduring mythology of the Old West, its cowboy
stereotype, and American identity.
Larison is an Oregon native who lives with his family in Bellfountain. He feels an affinity for the Central Oregon Coast, stating that, " A significant part of my writing process has always been long walks on Nye or Ona beach."
The Newport Reads! program is sponsored by the Newport Library Foundation, which will host an appearance by John Larison at the Performing Arts Center on April 11, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.
The Newport Library will have multiple copies of Whiskey When We're Dry available for checkout at the library. Copies of the book can be purchased at the book signing that will follow the author’s
presentation on April 11.
