Event Description:

Simon Russell Beale plays William Shakespeare’s Richard II, broadcast live from the stage of the Almeida Theatre in London, in "The Tragedy of King Richard II" at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at the Newport Performing Arts Center (PAC), 777 W. Olive St. in Newport.

This visceral new production about the limits of power will be directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins. Richard II, King of England, is irresponsible, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray and his court into uproar. Seeing no other option but to seize power, the ambitious Bolingbroke challenges the throne and the king’s divine right to rule.

National Theatre Live is an initiative by the UK’s National Theatre to broadcast live performances onto cinema screens around the world. Since its first season, which began in June 2009, millions have now experienced the National’s work on movie screens worldwide.

OCCA appreciates the support of the Jeannette Hofer Fund at the Oregon Community Foundation and the City of Newport, as well as individual event sponsors, which makes it possible to show NT Live in HD productions at the PAC.
