Event Description:

Eight-week session to focus on “Creating for the Stage;” classes run Oct. 5-Nov. 30

The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts is pleased to announce that Art Fridays, the popular youth-arts learning program at the Newport Visual Arts Center, returns for another eight-week fall session (October 5-November 30). The Arts Friday program offers hands-on visual arts learning geared toward middle-school students (ages 10-14). Each class is held on a Friday afternoon (3:45-5:45pm) in the VAC’s main classroom. Registration fees are $12 per class or $84 for the eight-week series (scholarships available).

The fall 2018 Art Fridays session includes visual art classes under the umbrella of “Creating for the Stage.” During the first four classes, students will develop props and masks to be included in the performance work, “Rick Bartow: In Spirit,” to be premiered at the Newport Performing Arts Center in December. Students will be guided by class instructors Marcy Kenyon and Tash Wesp, with input from theater director Marc Maislin. During the last four classes, students will develop mini puppet theater works, focusing on clay-building, puppet-building, costume design, backdrop painting and story boarding. The mini puppet theater classes will be led by instructor Eileen Hearne.
