Directions: Google Maps and other online mapping programs can have a problem directing you to the VAC. Here are the easiest directions to follow: heading north or south on Hwy. 101, turn west on NW 3rd St. Proceed straight down the hill. At the second stop sign, turn right. One short block later, turn left under Nye Beach archway. Proceed straight to Nye Beach turnaround and parking lot. The VAC is the large blue and gray building off the turnaround. To director offices and upper parking lot: turn west of Hwy. 101 at NW 3rd St. Head down hill. At second stop sign, continue straight 1.5 blocks, with the Sylvia Beach Hotel remaining on your left. The VAC administrative offices can be accessed through the smaller, upper parking lot.

Event Description:

Walking around the narrow streets of Nye Beach in Newport, it’s hard not to notice the creativity of area residents—banners hang from light posts like beckoning sentries, inviting residents and tourists alike to watch for the next piece of original artwork at the next street corner.

Now in its 10th year, the Nye Bear Banner Project not only celebrates local artists; it beautifies a coastal neighborhood while raising funds to support arts education and permanent public art through the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts. The banners are sold each year at a lively auction held during the fall.

The 10th annual Nye Beach Banner Auction will be held Sunday, November 11, 5-8pm, at the Newport Visual Arts Center (777 NW Beach Dr., Newport). A catalog of banner art is available for sale as well. Bidding will close promptly at 7pm.

“As Nye Beach continues to grow and develop so does the artistic expression with the Nye Beach Banner Art,” says Veronica Willemin, one of the project’s founders and past chair of the Nye Beach Merchants Association (NBMA). “One of the motivating factors is the combined interest in creative thinking and the importance of art in children’s lives.”

The 2018 Nye Beach Banner Project involved 46 visual artists, many of whom included textual statements in their work. The project enjoys the support of many community leaders as well as the OCCA, NBMA, Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, the OCCA Youth Arts Advisory Group,The Deep End Cafe, Panini Bakery, Café Stephanie, The Chowder Bow, Tables of Content, Jennifer Larsen, Tom Webb, Janet Webster and Catherine Rickbone.
