The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts is pleased to host the International Society of Experimental Artists’ (ISEA) 27th Annual Juried Exhibition from September 7 to October 28 in the Runyan Gallery at the Newport Visual Arts Center. Founded in 1991, ISEA has had over 500 national and international members who benefit from the ISEA’s mission to “celebrate experimentation and exploration, and to provide a way to share ideas and information.” Exhibition receptions will be held on Friday, September 7, 5-7pm (with exhibition juror Ruth Armitage speaking at 6pm), Saturday, September 22, 4-6:30pm (including an awards presentation and juror talk), and Friday, October 5, 5-7pm.
The ISEA—“where art meets innovation”-- was founded by artists Maxine Masterfield and Gracie Hegeman, who felt constrained by the rules that were in place for exhibitions of other leading national and international artists groups. The ISEA strives to give its members new avenues through which to display their work, and the group has held their annual exhibitions at top museums and cultural centers in Indiana, Michigan, Texas, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington, Florida and California, among other locations. ISEA has also conducted exhibit exchanges with galleries in Europe and presents online exhibitions.
ISEA’s 27th annual exhibition in Newport will include over 60 two-dimensional art works and various three-dimensional works created within the last three years, accompanied by a four-color exhibit catalog. Exhibit works were selected by juror Ruth Armitage, who will also select the artists to receive exhibition awards and cash prizes. Armitage is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, Rocky Mountain National Watermedia, California Watercolor Association and the Northwest Watercolor Society. The Watercolor Society of Oregon has awarded Armitage with its Outstanding Service Award, and she served as its first delegate to the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies.
As part ISEA’s 27th annual juried exhibition, an educational symposium will be held from September 21-28 at the Hallmark Resort in Newport. Further, a four-day painting workshop led by Ruth Armitage, “ABC’s of Abstraction,” will be offered from September 24-27 at the VAC. For more information on the symposium and workshop, visit www.iseaartexhibit.org. Registration for the symposium closes on September 15.
“OCCA is pleased to host ISEA and their members from across the country,” says OCCA VAC director Tom Webb. “It’s exciting that they chose Newport and the Oregon coast for their annual gathering.”
The Runyan Gallery is open Tuesday-Sunday, 11am to 6pm.
