Event Description:

3 LEG TORSO AND NCSB SHARE STAGE AT THE LIBERTY OCTOBER 28

3 Leg Torso and the North Coast Symphonic Band will collaborate on a joint production at 2 P.M. on Sunday, October 28th, at the Liberty Theater in Astoria, Oregon. The afternoon’s program is titled “Dances of Enchantment” and will present solo sets by both groups and a finale with both groups performing together in original arrangements of 3 Leg Torso tunes with wind band accompaniment. Doors open for general seating at 1:30 P.M.  Family friendly admission prices are made possible by generous grants from the Oregon Community Foundation, the Clatsop Cultural Coalition, the Oregon Cultural Trust, and the generous donors to the NCSB.

3 Leg Torso has appeared at the Liberty Theater opening for Pink Martini and at the Astoria Music Festival. Their original compositions include an eclectic synthesis of chamber music, tango, klezmer, Latin and Roma/gypsy music. The group formed in 1996 as a violin, cello and accordion trio but now includes acoustic bass and mallets and percussion. The principal composers and founding members of 3 Leg Torso who provide the core sound of the group are Béla R. Balogh on violin, trumpet, and octave mandolin, and Courtney Von Drehle on accordion and saxophone.

Dave Becker of Manzanita and former director of bands at Lewis and Clark College will conduct the NCSB which will perform alone and with 3 Leg Torso. Luigi Zaninelli’s “Dances of Enchantment” and Johan de Meij’s “Klezmer Classics” are the NCSB’s major works. The wind band will also perform a Sousa march and a movement from Loris Chobanian’s “Armenian Dances.”

3 Leg Torso will perform a solo set as well as five joint numbers with the NCSB. The group is described as Portland’s hippest eclectic chamber band performing elegant and daring modern chamber pop music infused with tradition and innovation. Evoking tango, Eastern European folk and world music traditions, their cosmopolitan style embraces wit and humor with thoughtful, uncommon and beautiful arrangements.
