Event Description:

The North Coast Symphonic Band will open its 38th season of performing quality wind band music at 2 P.M. on Sunday, October 29th, at the Liberty Theater in Astoria. Dave Becker of Manzanita and former director of bands at Lewis and Clark College returns as conductor and musical director. The afternoon’s musical program is titled “Postcards from Europe” and features Becker’s favorite wind band selections with an European theme.  Doors open at 1:15 P.M. and the Beach Buddies will present a pre-show of light jazz starting at 1:30 P.M.

NCSB Conductor and Musical Director Dave Becker tours Europe in alternate years with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music, a huge band and choir of Oregon high school students that he and his wife Kathy organize. Afterwards the Beckers stay in Europe to relax and enjoy the cities and the countryside. The NCSB will perform some of Becker’s favorite musical selections associated with good memories in Europe.

Sample selections on the October 29th program include Bach’s  “Prelude and Fugue in G minor” transcribed for band and Mendelssohn’s “Overture for Band” which was originally written for wind instruments.  The NCSB will perform “Les Papillons” or “The Butterflies” written by Coby Lankester and arranged by the well-known Dutch composer Johan de Meij. “Symphonic Dances from Fiddler on the Roof” references the many Jewish Quarters in Eastern Europe. An historic battle in France inspired "Ayres of Agincourt". “The March of the Belgian Parachutists” by Pierre Leemans comes from Belgium and the “Knightsbridge March” from Eric Coates London Suite is a well-loved tune in England. There will be several other classic European selections as well.

The Beach Buddies consist of Jeff Blanche on sax, John Hammond on trombone, David Graves on percussion, Terry Dahlgren on trumpet, and Lee Stromquist on piano. The group performs dance music of the big band era through the 1980’s, including classic rock and great swing tunes. The Beach Buddies are featured at the annual Octoberfest in Chinook, WA each October and play for weddings and other social events. They will perform a pre-show of their tunes starting at 1:30 before the main concert event starts.

Tickets for the October 29th event are available at the Liberty Theater Box Office, 1203 Commercial, in Astoria, from 2 to 5:30 PM Wednesday through Saturday and two hours before the performance. Regular admission is $15. Student tickets for those 18 and under are $7. For more information on tickets, visit www.liberty-theater.org.
