Event Description:

The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts presents “Mountain Memories: Glimpses of Asia,” a series of acrylic paintings on paper and wood panel by Newport artist and teacher Erin Price. The resulting images are based on the artist’s extensive time traveling throughout Asia and photographing her universal experience within differing cultures. The “Mountain Memories: Glimpses of Asia” exhibition will be held in the Upstairs Gallery at the Newport Visual Arts Center, from December 3-31. A public reception will be held on Saturday, December 3, 5-7pm at the VAC, with an artist talk scheduled for 6:15pm during the reception.

“This series was inspired when a stack of recently rediscovered photographs conjured memories of my years spent living in and returning to Asia. The photographs were never widely shared, because they were far more than travel photos. They were the neighbors and mountains I loved—the mist beneath our feet, the generosity of ash-cooked potatoes, the exhaustion of mountain hikes and the nights around the fire,” says Erin Price. “Particularly in an age so rife with tension, the celebration of culture and people who are different seems quite relevant to me.” Price’s exhibit will explore themes of culture, poverty, festivals and celebration. After showing at the VAC, “Mountain Memories: Glimpses of Asia” is scheduled to travel to Corban University in Salem, OR, during April 2017.

Erin Price is an art teacher at Newport Middle School. She is a K-12 teaching artist and TAG educator who enjoys fostering learning through creativity, especially in combination with science, math and social studies. Price is a mixed-media artist who incorporates a variety of repurposed materials in her work.

The Upstairs Gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday, noon-4pm.
