Students will explore the use of natural objects (clam shells and driftwood planks) as book covers to create a biodegradable oceanic library. Students will learn to choose materials, consider ethics of material sourcing and will learn bookbinding basics such as creating text blocks, binding exposed spines, preparing and attaching covers. Students will contemplate their relationship to the ocean, create thematic content and apply scrimshaw treatment to the books with mixed media such as pen and ink, watercolor, typewriter, embroidery and calligraphy. Each student will create a personal oceanic library made of two to four small handbound books.
