Newport Symphony Orchestra, Adam Flatt conductor

Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio, Mozart

Suite No. 1 for small orchestra, Stravinsky

Suite Modale for flute & strings, Bloch - Erin Adair, flute

Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee, Schuller

Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, Liszt

Our season's opener features the vivid flavors that comes from the exotic and faraway. Mozart's "The Abduction from the Seraglio" was the first fully staged opera Maestro Flatt ever conducted, and the exciting music of the overture has never lost its grip on him. Mozart's music conjures a storybook Turkey, complete with cymbals and swagger. Schuller (by way of Klee's painting) leads listeners to seven different realms, from the fully abstract to a picturesque and dusty Arab village. And Liszt's singing and dancing Hungary is thrilling.

Saturday only! Pre-concert talk with Maestro Flatt at 6:45 pm.

NSO's 2016-17 Season is sponsored by Georgia-Pacific.
