Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s "Sherlock," "The Imitation Game," "Frankenstein" at the National Theatre) takes on the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy.
Directed by Lyndsey Turner ("Posh," "Chimerica") and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, National Theatre Live captured this eagerly awaited production live and brings it once more to venues all over the world.
As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralyzed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state.
The "radical reinvention with a political intent" production has been heralded as a "a Hamlet for a world on the edge: a warning from history, and a plea for new ideas from a new generation" by Variety's Matt Trueman (read the whole review). The Daily Telegraph theatre critic Dominic Cavendish wrote that although he feared Cumberbatch might be "too icy, too remote," Benedict "displays a warmth of feeling that puts you on his side, in his world, suffering with him the slings and arrows of his outrageous fortune – a dear father murdered, his mother taken up with the murderer. You’re persuaded that in the agony of his grief, and the self-lacerating fury of his indecision, he stands at his wits’ end and contemplating suicide." (read full review)
