Astoria-based band, Acústica, featuring Multi-lingual vocalist, Dolores Villareal-Levine, performs in six languages and has a global, vintage style featuring songs from the 1930’s to the 1960’s. Band members include several well-known local performers, including John Orr on guitar and harmony vocals, Dave Ambrose on upright bass and Matt Crichton on Latin percussion. In addition to their unique world music, Acústica will also feature original songs written by the band members themselves.
Acústica’s debut CD is entitled “Cuatro Vidas” which is a Mexican song that was performed by Dolores’ father, Edward Villareal back in the day. The English translation of ‘Cuatro Vidas’ is 'Four Lives', which was also selected to represent the four band members that make up the group. The CD was recorded at Bentrabbit Audio Productions in Astoria with the invaluable expertise of Dave Gager. Local musician, Ray Coffey, is a featured musical guest on the CD as well. CD’s and Acústica t-shirts will be available for sale at the event.
The evening will begin with a pre-concert featuring visiting guest flamenco guitarist, David Villareal. Mr.. Villareal is the brother of Dolores Villareal-Levine. Mr.. Villareal is a California pharmacist by day, and has recently started living his passion as a flamenco guitar luthier by night. Interestingly, October 13th marks the birthday of Edward Villareal, the father of this musical brother and sister. “I don't think the timing of the CD release is a coincidence”, says Dolores. “I come from a long line of musicians, but most definitely, my dad influenced me musically in many ways. His first love was always music and he played in several bands ranging from Mexican music to Dixieland jazz. He bought one of my first albums, which was all in French, then bought my first guitar and taught me how to play my first chords. He was always one of my biggest fans. He will always be a major part of what I'm doing musically.”
This will be a fun-filled evening for your listening and dancing pleasure, and will include an eclectic mix of rhythms with a groove oriented approach and vamping harmonies! So whether it is a bolero, a tango or a samba, you will want to get up and dance! There will even be a waltz or two, as Acústica creates a nostalgic feel for the mature audience member as well as exposing and generating new fans of all ages. You will experience an eclectic, linguistic and cross-cultural sound, which is rarely performed live. So don’t miss out!!!
