Event Description:

Explore encaustics and mixed media, and expand your ideas of drawing and painting. Experiment with layering drawings, fabric and small objects with encaustic wax to reveal the new and unexpected. Learn to let go and develop your spontaneity, while building confidence with your drawing skills. Rather than solely working towards finished pieces, this time will be about pushing the surfaces and yourself to unexpected places. The basics of encaustic painting, safety, ventilation, equipment and techniques will be covered.

About the Instructor

Cathy Valentine is a studio artist who resides in Mt. Shasta, California, and has been working with encaustic for over ten years. In addition to teaching at the Sitka Center, she also teaches at Wax Works West, Rogue Gallery, and private classes. Her interest lies in line and transparency of wax, and her work is currently semi-abstract. She loves the challenge that encaustic brings, and the spontaneity of the wax. Her work can be viewed online at Davis and Cline Gallery in Ashland, Oregon and on Facebook.
