Directions: Google Maps and other online mapping programs can have a problem directing you to the VAC. Here are the easiest directions to follow: heading north or south on Hwy. 101, turn west on NW 3rd St. Proceed straight down the hill. At the second stop sign, turn right. One short block later, turn left under Nye Beach archway. Proceed straight to Nye Beach turnaround and parking lot. The VAC is the large blue and gray building off the turnaround. To director offices and upper parking lot: turn west of Hwy. 101 at NW 3rd St. Head down hill. At second stop sign, continue straight 1.5 blocks, with the Sylvia Beach Hotel remaining on your left. The VAC administrative offices can be accessed through the smaller, upper parking lot.

Event Description:

The 18th annual Newport Paper Arts Festival offers 17 classes over the three days of April 19, 20 and 21, given by 13 instructors.

"Paper Making with Inclusions"

Make paper from plant material. Cotton, hemp, flax, bamboo and Abaca in the form of “half-stuff” (cooked and cleaned) will be used to form sheets of paper using screens in the Western style. Soak and beat the pulp, float it in tubs of water, then lift out with screened molds. The basics of sheet forming will be taught using inclusions of maps, test papers, plant material and threads to make the sheets more unique. Finally, use inclusions between two thin sheets to make laminated papers. Every sheet is unique.

Skill Level: All Levels; Class Limit: 12; Materials Fee: $25

"Paper Making with Inclusions" is taught by Sandra Frick, a studio artist and teacher with degrees in art and ceramics. She lives in Florida where her ceramic, natural materials sculptures, paper bowls and fish prints can be found in regional galleries.
