Event Description:

SHOW YOUR WORK IN A NEW EXHIBITION SPACE

BECOME A PART OF THE COASTAL OREGON VISUAL ARTIST ARCHIVE

Call for Visual Artists: Be one of the first artists in your county to exhibit in the newCoastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase forMid-Career Artists. Plus, have a video capturing your work and process that becomes a permanent part of the Coastal Oregon Visual Artist Archive.

About the Showcase: In the spring of 2011, OCCA received a capital improvement grant from the Ford Family Foundation to build a showcase at the Newport Visual Arts Center to exhibit the work of mid-career Oregon visual artists who live within the boundaries of the arts council. With the help of a bequest from a former Newport artist, Anna Lee Davis, a donation from the auction of the 2010 hand painted art banners from the Nye Beach Merchants Association and financial support from OCCA and the Oregon Arts Commission, the showcase has been installed along with a touch screen computer programmed to show videos of the exhibiting artist's work, process and/or studio, building a visual archive of coastal artists.

The maple showcase has interior dimensions of 124" wide x 70" tall x 15" deep with slat walls on the back and right side to accommodate a variety of installation requirements from hooks for hanging framed art to glass or wooden shelves for three dimensional works. The showcase has locking, tempered glass doors, adjustable track lighting and an interior motion detection alarm system for security.

In May 2012, the first cycle of artists began showing their work in the Showcase. We are now ready for the second call for artists to begin rotating by county in the exhibit space from March 2013 through September 2013.

The Invitation: Mid-career Oregon artists from all 7 coastal counties- Curry, Coos, Douglas (Reedsport School District), Lane (Siuslaw School District), Lincoln,Tillamook and Clatsop counties- who meet the following criteria are invited to submit a proposal to exhibit in the Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase (COVAS).

  • Artist must be a practicing visual artist currently producing works of art (for sale)

  • Artist must have been a full-time resident of Oregon for at least 36 months prior to the application deadline and, if chosen, remain a resident through the duration of the exhibit

  • Artist must be 30 years of age or older at the time of application

  • Artist must show evidence, through appropriate documentation, of seven (7) or more years of active professional participation in his/her medium, and

  • Artist may not be enrolled in a degree-seeking program, either part- or full-time

The Selection Process: Exhibitors will be selected by the OCCA Exhibition Advisory Committee, a volunteer group comprised of artists, art professionals and the OCCA Director of the Newport Visual Arts Center.

Submissions are reviewed from digital images of art that are referenced by an accompanying inventory list. The artist's bio and the resume help the committee understand the level of artistic development. Proposals that are incomplete cannot be considered. Please refer to the Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase Submission Guidelines for details.

If You are Selected: The selected artist will be sent a digital camera and tripod to take still images and video footage of their work, their process, and their studio. The artist will be expected to return the digital files in a timely manner so that a presentation video can be created which will be shown for the duration of the exhibit. Videos and stills will become part of the Coastal Oregon Visual Artist Archive. Artists will receive a complimentary copy of the completed video presentation on a CD.

The selected artist must be able to deliver work ready to hang or display to the Visual Arts Center (VAC). The artist is responsible for transportation to and from the VAC. The exhibit will have an opening reception; see below for Exhibit Schedule by County.

All artists will have the opportunity to give an artist talk during their exhibit.

All artwork displayed in the showcase must be for sale. OCCA retains a commission of 30% for OCCA members and 35% for non-members from all art sales.

Postcards will be sent out to advertise the exhibit in the showcase. The selected artist can submit their mailing list for the bulk mailing. The artist will be responsible for half of the cost of the postcards and postage. The cost averages $70 to $80 depending on the number of cards mailed.
