Place Description:

Newport Public Library serves the Newport area (which includes South Beach, Agate Beach, and Newport proper) and offers numerous services and programs, including toddler and preschool story times, computer classes for adults, monthly reading circle, the Literary Flicks series of monthly film screenings, and online access to its holdings databases. Internet terminals are available for use by the general public.

    Albany poet Doug Stone's book, The Season of Distress and Clarity, was published this year by Finishing Line Press. His poems have appeared in Fireweed, The Portland Review, The Oregonian, Cloudbank, Fault Lines, Riven Poetry Journal, and the anthology, A Ritual To Read Together: Poems in Conversation with William Stafford. Stone won the Oregon Poetry Association’s Fall 2016 Poet’s Choice Award.

    About Schmidt is a 2002 film loosely based on the 1996 novel by Louis Begley. Warren Schmidt (Jack Nicholson) has led a safe, predictable life working as an actuary with Woodmen of the World. After he retires, he is forced to take a hard look at his wife, his life and his relationship with his estranged daughter. An often hilarious series of events follow as Schmidt embarks on an unpredictable RV journey to attend his daughter's wedding in Denver, where he meets her future mother-in-law Roberta (Kathy Bates).

    The Age of Innocence is a 1993 adaptation of Edith Wharton's 1920 novel of the same name. Set in New York City during the Gilded Age, the movie tells the story of Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis), who is engaged to marry the respectable young May Welland (Winona Ryder) and then meets her cousin, the Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer).
