Place Description:

Newport Public Library serves the Newport area (which includes South Beach, Agate Beach, and Newport proper) and offers numerous services and programs, including toddler and preschool story times, computer classes for adults, monthly reading circle, the Literary Flicks series of monthly film screenings, and online access to its holdings databases. Internet terminals are available for use by the general public.

  • Literary Flicks - Wuthering Heights

    April 10th, 2018 to April 10th, 2018

    Wuthering Heights is a 1970 film based on the classic Emily Brontë novel of the same name. Catherine (Anna Calder-Marshall) is the daughter of the lord of the manor who falls for the brooding stable boy Heathcliff (Timothy Dalton). As the two grow up, they spend endless days exploring the sprawling moors of Yorkshire, eventually discovering in each other a fiery, powerful love.

  • Literary Flicks - Henry V

    May 8th, 2018 to May 8th, 2018

    Henry V is a 1944 adaptation of William Shakespeare's play of the same name. It stars Laurence Olivier, who also directed. The setting shifts between a stage of the Globe Theater, stylized film sets, and realistic, outdoor scenery. The story focuses on the young Henry, who is determined to bring France under English control once again. Henry leads his troops through several battles in France, culminating in the Battle of Agincourt. Henry then woos Catherine of Valois, daughter of the defeated French King Charles VI.

This is the focus of “Ritual and Ceremony in Modern Life,” a free conversation with Holly Pruett on Saturday, May 19 at 2 p.m. This program is hosted by the Newport Public Library and sponsored by Oregon Humanities.

  • Literary Flicks - In the Time of the Butterflies

    In the Time of the Butterflies is a 2001 film based on Julia Álvarez's book of the same name. Set in the Dominican Republic during the dictatorship of President Rafael Trujillo (Edward James Olmos), the story is a fictionalized account of the Mirabal sisters. Selma Hayek stars as Minerva Mirabel, who leads her sisters Mate (Mia Maestro) and Patria (Lumi Cavazos) into the resistance movement after Trujillo murders their father.

  • Literary Flicks - The Hundred Foot Journey

    July 10th, 2018 to July 10th, 2018

    The Hundred-Foot Journey is a 2014 film adapted from Richard Morais' 2010 novel of the same name. Helen Mirren stars as Madame Mallory, the proprieter of a Michelin-starred restaurant in a French Village. When an Indian restaurant opens across the street from hers, a rivalry develops between her and the Kadam family, which runs it.
