Description:

Dave Baldwin first became interested in art while studying scientific illustration under renowned illustrator Donald B. Sayner at the University of Arizona in the 1960s. By the 1980s he had moved from photorealism to experimenting with various kinds of abstraction. Subsequently, he has been building figurative abstractions with alkyd, oil, and acrylic paints, then adding sand, metallic leaf, wax, glass, and various fabrics for textural effects. His solo exhibition venues include Vanderbilt and Emory Universities, the Utah Shakespearean Festival (Cedar City), Thousand Oaks (CA) Civic Arts Plaza, and Grants Pass (OR) Museum of Art. His work was featured in Scientific American (May, 2000), Sports Illustrated (Aug. 12, 1996), and Graphic Review (Feb., 1996) and is included in the permanent collection of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Museum, Cooperstown, NY. His painting, Fugue for the Pepper Players, was featured in Treasures of the Baseball Hall of Fame by John Thorn (1998). Also, Dave taught “Science and Art” at the Art Institute of California in San Diego. He is a member of the International Society of Experimental Artists and a founding member of the Yachats (OR) Arts Guild. In 2011, ‘12, and ‘13 he served as juror for the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference Art Competition. He is now retired from careers as a baseball player, geneticist, and engineer.
